ENCOUNTERS

27, 28 and 29 November 2012 Theater Frascati, Amsterdam

Encounters is a mini-festival in which Ivana Müller joins forces with a number of artists, theoreticians and performers inviting spectators to a 3-day long journey into a collective rethinking of the roles we play and positions we take both in and out of the theatre

With shows, lectures, discussions and installations staged in all 3 venues of Frascati Theater, Encounters relates to a very ancient and at the same time a highly contemporary idea of theatre as a place of sharing and participation.

Encounters offers, with an evening program that lasts longer then “just” the time of a show, a frame for a community of spectators and performers to engage in the movement of ideas, thoughts and reflections in the hope that the acts of “spectating” and “performing” can take the politics of representation beyond the doors of the theatre.

The program consists of 4 very different performative propositions that can be watched in as a parcour or seen separately.

We Are Still Watching is a “reading rehearsal” in which spectators encounter each other while together reading a script that has been written especially for them.

In the “mini-society of spectators and performers” that is created each evening of the show, everybody slowly but surely gets his or her role…We Are Still Watching is a piece in which everybody participates and the idea of “spectacle” slowly shifts to where we least expect it.

Concept & text: Ivana Müller in collaboration with Andrea Bozic, David Weber-Krebs & Jonas Rutgeerts, Light design & technical direction: Martin Kaffarnik

In Common is a piece for 10 performers staged as a dialogue between two persons. In other words, it is an ensemble piece that curiously takes form of a “pas de deux”.

While trying to move in unison, looking for a consensus between bodies of different shapes and sizes that together represent a body, performers often find themselves in positions and problems comparable to those we are familiar with in contemporary democracies

What we represent and how we are represented, are the crucial questions of this piece in which a series choreographic propositions create a surprising playground for socio-political exploration.

Concept, choreography and direction: Ivana Müller. Performers: Sarah van Lamsweerde, Pere Faura, Karen Røise Kielland, Katja Dreyer, Pedro Ines, Stephen Liebman, Yannick Greweldinger, Clara Amaral, Noha Ramadan, Bas Jilesen. Artistic and textual advice: Bill Aitchison. Dramaturgy: Jonas Rutgeerts. Sound design: Viljam Nybacka,  Costum design: Liza Witte,  Light design & technical direction: Martin Kaffarnik

Running Commentaries is a project by theorist and performance practitioner Bojana Cvejic which Ivana Müller has invited to Encounters. While adopting a format similar to that known from sports events on TV or from DVD’s, in this work 3 commentators simultaneously and in real time give running commentaries on a dance performance that is projected on a screen. Equipped with 3-channel headphones, the spectator may chose which version they wish to listen to, and thus which vision of the show they want to follow.

Finally Together On Time is a lecture performance by Ivana

Müller and Bojana Kunst in which the physically present Kunst and virtually present Müller debate in a playful yet serious way issues such as Time, Promises, Dead-Lines and Greece. In this touching and quirky ode to friendship, the philosopher and the artist reveal ways and methods in which they have been working together over the last 10 years.

Alongside the shows and lectures, Encounters will host a number of side projects. A post-show talk will be held every evening and “The Library of Favourites”, a virutal library based on the favourite books of all the Encounters collaborators will be projected as a slide show in the Frascati lobby.
